Byzantine Cilento
Just like Santiago
The Cammino di San Nilo is the first active footpath of the wider network of the “Cammini Bizantini” (Byzantine ways), a project that promotes slow mobility within the Cilento region’s three national parks.
Your holidays at our hotel in the Cilento region don’t have to be spent entirely by the sea. The area inland also has plenty of wonderful surprises in store. If you love hiking and hitting the trails, we recommend the Cammino di San Nilo, a 103km walk that is divided into 7 stages. It winds its way through Basso (low) Cilento before arriving in Palinuro, in the municipality of Centola, passing through 11 beautiful villages nestled amidst the nature of Cilento, Vallo di Diano, and Alburni National Park.
The route extends over ascents and descents, through beech forests on the mountains and past holm oaks and olive trees in the Mediterranean maquis, and is dotted with medieval villages. What makes this walk one of a kind is the fusion of history, religion, nature, and tradition.
The Cammino di San Nilo follows the route that led a young man named Nicola from the municipality of Rossano Calabro to don monk’s robes and receive the name “Nilo” at the monastery in San Nazario, which is now found in the municipality of San Mauro la Bruca.
This pilgrimage lets you discover ancient trails through which the Italo-Greek monks left their mark on this vast, abundant area. If you’d like to experience a stage of the Cammino while also enjoying the Cilento coast, our hotel in Palinuro is the ideal place to stay.
